Restaurant Review: Girls’ Day Out At Papiee’s Meatro

If you know me, you know that I absolutely do not joke with my family and friends. Between the ongoing pandemic and working mostly remotely, I’ve barely hung out with friends in over a year. When my friends, Gbemi, Chinelo, and I finally decided to meet up, we needed somewhere affordable and central-ish within Lagos. I ran an ‘Ask me anything’ via my Instagram, seeking recommendations, and Papiee’s Meatro, Yaba was the winner.

I arrived at the location at about 1 pm. It’s off Herbert Macaulay Road, Yaba, and is easy to locate – via Google Maps or Public Transport.

The Papiee’s Meatro Ambience

Due to the fact that I didn’t know what to expect, I got to Papiee’s Meatro and was surprised that it was a cabana-like space. For some reason, I expected an indoor-outdoor space. There were a few people there and there was no music playing. I loved that! I detest noise.

Random: I think that there’s an indoor space, but I had and still have no clue where it is.

It has a lounge-ish vibe with different kinds of chairs and tables, standing fans, and televisions that made it look like watching football there would be a match made in heaven (Did you get the pun???)

I sat for a while waiting for my friends to show up and I wasn’t ‘disturbed’ by anyone until someone that looked like they were a part of management asked me if I’d been attended to. I explained to her that I was waiting for friends and she courteously told me to reach out if I needed anything.

As the day progressed, the place became fuller and was literally filled to the brim when we left at about 5:30pm. I’m sure it ‘bubbles’ at night.

The Papiee’s Meatro Menu

Their simple menu was surprising to me, because of the ‘Meatro’ in it. I expected lots of meat, but it was a barrage of carbohydrate, some meat and typical drinks. Considering that I’m not an adventurous foodie, I was fine with it, but it’s not the place to eat different. Of course, some of the menu items were simply not available.

On the bright side, the food’s affordable and the size is fine – not small or big. Nothing spectacular on either side.

The Food Experience

My friends and I ordered different things- and their service definitely reflected this. All the meals/ drinks came at different times

The Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri was served first and after telling us that the Pina Colada was available, the waitress came out, at least 30 minutes later to inform us that it was suddenly…not. My friend had to go with the Chapman.

Both of them tasted like Smoov- Yup, the 100 Naira Chapman drink.

The Strawberry Daiquiri I ordered, after waiting for over an hour, was apparently ‘finished.’ I never got it. They tried to convince me to get another one, and I politely told the waitress, ‘No, plis.’

I ordered the Suya Sandwich and Grills, while my friends ordered the Ram Shawarma and Spaghetti. My friends called their shawarma and spaghetti ‘bland’ and ‘basic’ respectively.

My meal came in after about 1 hour 30 minutes, after tailing the waitress every 30 minutes. I couldn’t believe it.

On the flip side, I enjoyed it. The sandwich was the right amount of spicy, crispy and creamy, in addition to being filling! The only con was that the suya was cold but the grilled chicken and fries were simple and sweet.

It was obvious, from the get-go that I had the best meal. Just my luck.

Final Thoughts

I liked how courteous the members of staff at Papiee’s Meatro were. Itis a very affordable place to chill with friends, but if you prefer indoor dining (like I do) this may not be your jam.

They could do so much better with their food preparation time. It was horrid.

Would I go back?

Only if it’s convenient. I wouldn’t go back because it’s a place ‘I look forward to going to.’

Nah, G.
